While Buddhism is often described as a religion, it could also be described as a collection of various philosophies, based initially on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama. Many practitioners recard Buddhism not as a religion, but as teachings that help to guide one to directly experience reality.

Buddhism began around the 5th century BC, under the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, often referred to as "the Buddha".
